Mentorships

"Being a part of the CPRS Mentorship Program has been invaluable. Not only is my mentor a wonderful person who I will stay in touch with, but she's been instrumental in my first year of school. Her input has helped with my assignments because I've been able to bounce ideas off of her and refine them. Her advice will stay with me for the remainder of my career and this has helped me formulate a career path for myself."

- Alicia Olive, past participant in the CPRS Vancouver Mentorship Program

Program overview

File 102The CPRS Vancouver Mentorship Program gives students a wonderful opportunity to benefit from the guidance of experienced public relations professionals. The program runs for five months (from January to May) and involves the careful pairing of a CPRS Vancouver Student Member with a CPRS National or Affiliate Member who has been working in the PR and communications industry for at least five years. We are currently looking for mentors to volunteer and for mentees to apply for the 2012 program from now until November 30, 2011. The mentor/mentee meetings will begin in January, 2012.

Vision

Participating in the CPRS Vancouver Mentorship Program should be a mutually rewarding experience.

Students will gain practical insight to enhance their academic study, a chance to explore a specific area of public relations and an opportunity to receive guidance on their related projects and assignments. In turn, professionals will have the opportunity to exercise their knowledge, gain insight into current education trends and set standards for the next generation of public relations professionals.

The desired outcome of the CPRS Vancouver Mentorship Program will be a public relations community in which the next generation of professionals becomes more educated and prepared, while reinforcing current professional standards.

Expectations

Both mentor and mentee must:

  • Commit to the full five months of the mentoring relationship
  • Meet once a month for at least one hour, preferably in person
  • Be punctual and prepared for each meeting
  • Give advanced notice if a meeting must be postponed
  • Limit contact (e-mail or telephone) between meetings to once per week, unless otherwise agreed
  • Reply to e-mail and telephone calls within 48 hours, except for in extenuating circumstances

Matching Mentors & Mentees

Mentors and mentees will be matched based on a number of factors, including shared career interests (industry type, organization type, job functions) and location. To apply to take part in the program use the Mentor Volunteer Form or the Mentee Application Form.
