Job Description

The BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) is a strong, dynamic voice for nurses and nursing in British Columbia, representing more than 45,000 members. BCNU provides collective agreement negotiation and support to its members, as well as professional and advocacy services in the field of research, clinical practice, leadership and education. As the voice of the nursing profession in the province, we advocate for nurses and patients to ensure safe, quality, public health care for all.

The Communications Officer – Web & Digital is responsible for the development and management of editorial content for website and online marketing efforts.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develops editorial and other content for website and supports online marketing efforts.
a) Creates both re-purposed content and original writing in a format that meets web usability standards and is consistent with the organization’s design guidelines, brand and strategies.

b) Develops editorial and functional content for all website and online marketing efforts. Liaises with all BCNU departments, to gather and create content then work with web team members in the organization to design and post information in a collaborative environment.

c) Ensures editorial content is written and presented in a format that meets web usability standards and is consistent with the organization’s design guidelines, brand and strategy.

d) Manages and coordinates continuity between BCNU’s Member Portal, website and other communications channels, recognizing internal and external audiences. 

e) Manages and oversees integration and development of member engagement platforms currently in use, including SharePoint, Formstack, BCNU Member Portal, Zendesk, Zoom and CVENT. 

f) Collaborates with web team and department members to enhance website functionality and develop innovative ways to effectively meet members’ needs. 

g) Actively participates and contributes to the department’s creativity, efficiency and accomplishment of broad goals and policies identified by the strategic plan. 

h) Provides analytics and makes suggestions for appropriate measurables based on operations plans and strategic initiatives. 
 
i) Exhibits leadership and initiative in maintenance of functional web team and individual projects as directed by department coordinator or team leader.

2. Assists with other Communications Department activities such as writing articles for Update magazine, drafting bulletins, brochures and other marketing collateral as needed; supporting social media management. 

3. Assists with the formulation of communications and campaign plans for the union. 

4. Assists in the planning and implementation of seminars, conferences, conventions and special events. 

5. Provides work direction to assigned administrative staff.
a) Participates in the efficient and cooperative use of resources and personnel.

6. Performs any other duties essential to web development as directed. 
 

Qualifications

  • First and foremost, you are passionate about digital communications, respected by team members, and recognized for your website development capabilities. 
  • College or university education in an applicable program such as communications, journalism or public relations, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive and progressive experience (3-5 years) with proven web writing and editing skills, including product descriptions and promotional copy. Knowledge of content management platforms, web usability standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, write and edit for various purposes, including digital publications and social media.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the current media industry, including social media, digital applications, video and emerging communications technologies.  
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging and collaborative work environment.
  • Experience with union environments, health care industry, and coaching and supervising is preferable.
