Job Description

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a highly motivated, team-orientated individual to join our Surrey Headquarters’ team as Senior Manager of Communications and Media Relations.

The primary purpose of this position is to manage internal and external communications as well as media relations activities for MNBC. This position reports to the Chief Public Affairs Officer and supports the various ministries in dealing with media related issues. 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications
  • Develop and manage the MNBC Communications Plan.
  • Compile information and write collateral materials including presentations, briefing notes, news releases, speeches, brochures, backgrounders, newsletters, profiles, bios and articles for publications and websites.
  • Create rich and creative content that is optimized for search engines.
  • Manage overall brand identity and reputation.
  • Manage all social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn etc…
  • Develop branding initiatives, internal communications and external media relations.
  • Manage media relations and maximize media opportunities to raise public awareness regarding key issues facing MNBC and its citizens.
  • Develop internal publications such as newsletters, releases, email announcements, planned publications, on-line, intranet, video, special projects and assignments.
Media 
  • Regularly draft and launch media releases and information campaigns.
  • Get MNBC featured on radio, TV, or the Internet.
  • Lead message development, pitch and announcement strategies.
  • Develop strong relationships with local, regional and national media.
  • Track media stories of significant interest to MNBC, MNBC citizens or those working in MNBC operations.
Administration and Finance
  • Lead the development of the annual Communications Department operating budget and ensure financial integrity is maintained.
  • Managed and oversee the hiring and training of support staff within the communications department.
  • Actively participate as a critical member of the MNBC Senior Management Team to create solutions that advance the successful, efficient and effective delivery of MNBC programs and services.
  • Oversee work done by external contractors and suppliers for goods and services.
  • Regularly keep the CEO apprised of all pertinent issues, information for effective decision-making, and provide input for the preparation of annual short and long-range communication plans and briefing materials.
Work Environment
  • Works normal hours of 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. Monday through Friday, although longer hours may be required when facing deadlines or dealing with urgent public relations issues.
  • May be required to attend social and community-based events after hours to represent MNBC.
  • Will be required to travels to other MNBC regional offices or to promotional events.
OTHER COMMENTS
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed to help ensure the efficient operation of MNBC
  • Ability to provide a satisfactory criminal record check
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s license and personal vehicle for work purposes

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or a related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in a communications-related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience leading a communications team or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and/or awareness of Métis people in B.C.
  • Proven ability to utilize, adapt and embrace new technologies. This includes Word, Excel and other database/software required by the role.
