Strategic Communications Officer

University Communications + Marketing (UC+M) within the Division and External Relations, provides strategic leadership and tactical support to assist UVic to realize its vision of being a university of choice for outstanding students, faculty and staff from BC, Canada and around the globe; strengthen its position among the best universities in Canada and the world; and achieve recognition for UVic’s significant contributions toward the betterment of global society.
The department leads the development and promotion of a consistent institutional narrative, a compelling and strategic long-term positioning for UVic, and an institutional communications and marketing plan to help achieve UVic’s objectives with key internal and external audiences including prospective and current students, faculty and staff, alumni and donors, community and industry partners, funding agencies and government decision makers among others.
With the direct guidance of the university’s Executive Council, the department works with academic and administrative units as partners, to make the most effective use of university resources to advance unit and institutional priorities.
Communications + Marketing is organized into highly collaborative teams arranged around its main areas of responsibility: Media Relations and Research Communications, Stakeholder Communications, Strategic Marketing, Internet Strategies, Creative Development, Internal Communications, Digital Media, and Administrative Support.
Reporting to the Manager, Media Relations and Research Communications, the Strategic Communications Officer works as an integral member of UC+M to position the university’s academic and institutional units, with an emphasis on strategic communications and content development.
The officer will play a key role with responsibility for:
developing strategic communication plans with analysis and specified deliverables on a variety of projects at the unit and institutional level;
producing content relevant to target audiences, and consistent with institutional and unit goals, including feature articles, web content and other digital assets; and
coordinating with other UC+M teams with respect to strategic content planning and development, project scheduling and review processes, consultations, creative development and coordination.
This position works collaboratively within the Division of External Relations and with unit leaders and their designates, faculty communications officers, photographers, videographers and web developers/strategists.
An undergraduate degree in communications, writing or a related field and a minimum of five years’ experience in a communications role (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Preference may be given for work experience at a post-secondary institution.
A successful track record of effective strategic communication planning
Superior interview, writing and editing skills
Experience in creating content in multiple formats including writing in a digital first environment
Experience in a consultative/advising role
Experience working in a large complex environment with a wide variety of stakeholders
Strategic communications planning with critical analysis and key message development
Use of social media platforms for strategic goals and outcomes
Proficiency in collaborative software programs for team projects
Focus on quality - demonstrated personal effectiveness to take personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work, and achieves results with little oversight.
Develop partnerships- promote collaboration, partnership and cross-organizational activities that share knowledge and pool resources to get things done
Make informed decisions - think critically and creatively about issues and opportunities, and present options to support strategic risk taking and innovation.
Invite diverse perspectives - consider diverse viewpoints to ensure rich and thoughtful discussion of issues leading to stronger decision-making
Remain agile - adapt to changing business needs, conditions, and work responsibilities.
