Name: Michelle Clausius, APR
Job title: Associate Director, Development & Communications
Company you work for: Covenant House Vancouver
Career background: Started in Toronto assisting with the PR for Imperial Tobacco, then Rothmans (where they delivered free cigarettes to us with the mail each morning – those were the days!). So to make amends, the last 20 years have been spent solely with non-profits; causes include blind and visually impaired people, animal welfare and homeless and runaway youth.
Career aspirations: A leadership position with an organization that helps people
Greatest career challenge: Debating trappers on talk radio
Greatest career success: Launching a successful social media strategy for Covenant House that has increased donations and support for homeless youth
Biggest career mistake or regret: Responding to Metro Newspaper’s question as to whether Ryan Reynolds was as sexy in person as he was in the movies with “He’s a handsome man”; quote went world-wide in different languages. Too embarrassing for words.
Favourite PR/communications campaign: Obama 2008 and probably 2012 by the looks of things
PR role model: Too many to mention – anyone with their APR is someone whose advice I often seek out
Best career advice: Tell good stories with honesty
Best place to ‘do coffee’ in Vancouver: JJ Bean, Davie & Homer
Favourite journalist to pitch to: Pete McMartin
Favourite website: www.laineygossip.com
Favourite social media site: Facebook
Fun fact about you: I got stuck in the Covenant House elevator with Jean Chrẽtien. Longest 5 minutes of my life
