At CPRS, we're launching a new online series which will 'reveal' the PR student in Vancouver. The first person to feature is Kelsey Van Lissum, who is studying for her Public Relations Certificate at Simon Fraser University. Read on to learn about Kelsey's world...
What’s your average day like?
No day is average, but typically I wake up at 7:30am to give myself plenty of time to eat a bagel or cereal while watching the morning news. School consumes my 9am-4pm day with stimulating and knowledgeable professors, as well as my creative fellow students.
After class I strive to get in some physical activity if it’s walking the sea wall, going to the gym or taking a hot yoga class. For dinner, if I’m not with my boyfriend engorging in our addiction, sushi, I love making any kind of pasta I can throw prawns into.
If I can keep myself awake to read a few pages, I’ll dive into a good book. Recently I’ve been reading Mercy, Mercy Me, a biography on Marvin Gaye and the life of Motown.
Are you an ‘early bird’ or ‘night owl’?
If I can fit a nap in the middle of the day, I can be both!
What appeals to you most about working in PR?
Public Relations appeals to me first-off because of exchanging creative ideas with famously talented and sociable people I’ll get the privilege to work with. Also having versatility in the workplace is important to me, being able to work in a team environment and independently.
What’s your dream job?
My immediate goal is to work towards being an Account Manager in a Vancouver-based agency; from there I look forward to what the future holds!
What’s your favourite PR campaign?
One of my favorite PR campaigns is the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. What a great way of joining the products that make us feel beautiful and the promotion of positive self-esteem to beautiful women around the globe.
Who is your PR idol?
I don’t know if there’s anyone in the PR world who isn’t inspired by “the father of Public Relations,” Edward Bernays. I also had the pleasure of meeting Patti Schom-Moffatt of Edelman Vancouver; I am motivated by her extensive career.
What’s your favourite social network?
I’ve been quite addicted to Instagram since I joined the iPhone world. I am making my way to being an avid Twitter user as well.
Which coffee shop are you most likely to frequent?
Starbucks! Passion Tea Lemonade with a raspberry shot = Heaven!
A fun fact about you:
I love to practice hot yoga, meditate and hike.
