Karm Sumal, one of the Vancity Buzz founders, gave us the inside scoop on how to pitch him and what to expect over the next 5 years for his blog.
What do you love most about your job?
The people I work with and have met through my job is what I love most. The day to day experience just wouldn't be the same if I was stuck behind a cubicle in a typical 9 to 5 role.
When is the best time to pitch to you?
There really is no best time to pitch. But if you have something that has deadlines I'd suggest pitching me at least 72 hours in advance and supply me with the right media materials.
What do you look for in a story?
Anything that is relatable to the Lower Mainland and of course it has to be relevant to our audience.
What’s your biggest bug bare when working with PRs?
Non personalized pitches. Mass emails are the worst.
What’s your average day like?
I wake up around 5:30, do my daily morning routine. Head to the office around 6:30 am and plan out the daily agenda. Somewhere in there I find to spend time with family and friends as that is something extremely important to me. It helps me keep a good work life balance.
Where do you see Vancity Buzz in 5 years?
In 5 years I see us pushing 1.5 million views a month, if not more. We'll have more offline engagement as well. Other than that, I really can't say as we'll have to adapt to future industry challenges as they come.
