What’s your name?
Where are you studying and what’s the name of your program?
I’m studying Communications at Capilano University.
Date of joining CPRS as a student member:
I first joined CPRS in February 2013 and just celebrated my first year as a member.
What’s your average day like?
The only thing two days have in common for me is my earl grey tea. I can’t function without it. From there I start writing. I work as public relations coordinator for a local art studio, write for The Gold Zebra and for my own blog, Acorn & Oak. Everyday looks different depending on the project, but it always requires a good amount of writing. Somewhere in there I also try to fit in my school work.
Are you an ‘early bird’ or ‘night owl’?
Early bird for sure. I find I get my best ideas early on in the day.
What appeals to you most about working in PR?
The changing landscapes. I love knowing that the career I enter will be constantly changing and adapting. I’m genuinely excited to see how PR will progress with new social platforms and how different it will look in 10 years.
What’s your dream job?
My dream is to work in an agency that I adore, with creative and inspiring coworkers. Preferably working for kind clients with interesting stories to tell.
What’s your favourite PR campaign?
That’s tricky, because there are so many that I love and look to for inspiration. If I had to narrow it down, I really love the Heart Truth campaign launched by the Heart and Stroke foundation. Their main aim was to challenge the perception that heart disease was a “man’s disease”. They leverage social, digital, and community outreach to share their message. Each year celebrities and fashion designers take part in their fashion show, with proceeds going back to the foundation. The campaign has increased awareness ten-fold and does so in a beautiful way.
Who is your PR idol?
I have two actually, Amanda Haines and Annabelle Immega from Reformation PR. I interned with them this past summer and learned so much from these women. They’re both business and media-savvy and taught me what working in PR really means.
What’s your favourite social network?
It’s got to be Twitter. I was a slow adopter, I didn’t see the benefit for personal use. Now I’m hooked. You can find me tweeting at @amandalmcginnis and @CPRSVanStudents!
Which coffee shop are you most likely to frequent?
I don’t want to sound like too much of a Vancouverite, but Starbucks. No one else can make my lattes the way they do.
A fun fact about you:
One of my big goals (aside from working in PR) is to travel the world. So far, I’ve traveled the majority of Asia and Europe. I’m currently dreaming of seeing South America and Northern Africa.
