Adding Periscope to Your PR Toolkit

If you’re in the field of public relations, you may have heard of the new social media platform that has taken the world by storm. Twitter recently released Periscope, a live video app that allow users to live stream directly from their phones. In fact, it is currently the fastest growing social media platform, hitting one million users within 10 days of its launch, and 10 million users within four months.

WHY IS PERISCOPE EFFECTIVE?

It is no surprise that Periscope is a breath of fresh air for social media users who are looking to build more real and direct connections, and have more authentic conversations in the social media world which has become increasingly automated. With this offer of increased interactivity, viewers can follow their favourite scoper (a term to describe the broadcaster) from around the world, comment in real time, then allow the scoper to respond to them directly from the broadcast. By tapping on the screen of the broadcast, users also have the option to give hearts to show their support.

HOW ARE COMPANIES USING PERISCOPE?

Several large companies and popular influencers have adopted Periscope in their PR toolkits and announcements. For example, TELUS used Periscope at the launch of their new office building, TELUS Garden. Other companies like Doritos are using the platform in an innovative way. Doritos is colliding objects like watermelons with laptops and rubber chickens with eggs to promote their “collision” of flavours in a single broadcasting session. GE used a drone to fly to different GE facilities in the span of five days to promote #DroneWeek. Turkish Airlines used Periscope to broadcast the behind-the-scenes experience of a full flight. News stations are using the platform to showcase live events they are attending. Still, other influencers like makeup gurus have used it to stream live tutorial sessions and give Q&A sessions so their fans will have a chance to ask questions in real time.

HOW CAN YOU USE PERISCOPE?

Here are a few suggested ideas for how you can implement Periscope in your PR strategy and build a deeper connection with your brand's followers:

  • Live event coverage

  • Q&A session

  • Scripted entertainment

  • Behind-the-scenes tours

  • Tutorial sessions

  • Interviews

  • Launching a new product

  • Testimonials from influencers

Most importantly, think outside of the box and be creative!

As a new social media platform, brands are just beginning to experiment and discover new best practices. With live stream as a tool, viewers understand that nothing is perfect. In fact, viewers appreciate authentic, unedited footage. The first step to using Periscope is to just run with it!
