Amplifying Women's Voices: There’s Strength in Every Story this International Women's Day

This year, the Government of Canada recognizes International Women’s Day (IWD) with the theme, “Strength in Every Story,” reminding us of the power of storytelling in driving gender equality. Paired with the global IWD campaign, “Accelerate Action,” this is a call for communicators to move beyond recognition and actively shape narratives that empower, inspire, and break down barriers.

As PR and communication professionals, we hold a unique responsibility: the words we choose, the stories we tell, and the voices we elevate have the potential to challenge biases and reshape perspectives. This IWD, let’s ask ourselves:

  • Do our campaigns celebrate women as leaders, innovators, and change-makers?

  • Are we amplifying a diverse range of voices, including those of Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQ2+, and disabled women?

  • Does our language reinforce stereotypes, or does it open doors to new possibilities?

Telling Stories That Drive Change

Women’s stories are powerful, not because of adversity, but because of strength, resilience, and leadership. As we craft narratives for brands, organizations, and the public, consider these strategies:

Use Inclusive Language – Words matter. Ensure communications are free from gendered stereotypes and instead, highlight women’s accomplishments without reinforcing traditional roles. Use this inclusive writing guide from the Government of Canada as a resource.

Go Beyond Symbolic Representation – Feature real women in leadership, STEM, business, and advocacy. Share authentic experiences that showcase action and achievement, not just struggle.

Leverage Your Platform for Visibility – Whether through media interviews, social campaigns, or internal communications, ensure women’s voices are not just included, but centered in the conversation. The Women of Impact in Canada gallery is a great resource to highlight Canadian trailblazers.

Support Women-Owned Businesses and Organizations – Collaborate with women-led initiatives, showcase their contributions, and ensure supplier diversity in your campaigns.

Action Starts Here

This International Women’s Day, let’s commit to accelerating action through storytelling that uplifts and empowers. Whether you’re crafting social media content, writing speeches, or advising leadership, remember: every story told shapes the future. Let’s ensure that the future is equitable, inclusive, and representative of the strength in every woman’s story.
