June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, with June 21 marking National Indigenous Peoples Day. This period is not just a calendar event; it is a profound opportunity for all Canadians to honour the heritage, resilience, and diverse cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
For Public Relations professionals, this month carries distinct weight. Communication shapes culture. We have a professional responsibility to push past performative gestures and foster genuine organizational learning.
Why It Matters to the PR Community
Our storytelling defines corporate narratives. By elevating Indigenous histories, contemporary achievements, and ongoing contributions, PR professionals help weave truth and reconciliation into the fabric of their organizations. Failing to engage meaningfully risks alienating stakeholders and overlooking a critical part of our collective Canadian identity.
National Indigenous History Month is also an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the leadership, innovation, achievements, and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.
Reconciliation is built through relationships, not campaigns. National Indigenous History Month can be a starting point, but meaningful engagement requires ongoing commitment throughout the year.

Partner with Indigenous organizations, businesses, artists, or speakers when appropriate.
-
Amplify Indigenous voices rather than speaking on behalf of Indigenous communities.

Ensure social media content goes beyond acknowledgements and focuses on education and awareness.
-
